The United States has confirmed carrying out multiple airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) militants operating in northwest Nigeria, following rising attacks on Christian communities in the region. Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced the operation on Christmas Day, stating the strikes were authorised directly by him.
According to Trump, the targets were ISIS fighters accused of killing innocent civilians, particularly Christians, in areas around Sokoto State near the Niger border. The action followed weeks of warnings from U.S. officials over what they described as an alarming surge in extremist violence.
The Pentagon released an unclassified video showing a missile launch linked to the operation, reinforcing U.S. resolve against terrorist groups. Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry confirmed it was informed ahead of the strikes, describing the action as part of ongoing security cooperation with international partners rather than a unilateral move.
The ministry reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working with allies to counter terrorism and violent extremism across the country.
