Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has claimed that the wave of governors defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is driven by the belief that the Presidency will influence the outcome of the 2027 general elections in their favour.
Kwankwaso made the allegation during an interview with Central TV, where he criticized what he described as a growing loss of confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process among political office holders.
According to the former Kano State governor, many politicians no longer see the electorate as the deciding factor in elections but instead believe that aligning with the ruling party offers them an advantage.
“It is not only the governor of Kano that is in APC. Almost all the governors are of the opinion that they should join the ruling party because they believe that the presidency will write results for them,” Kwankwaso said.
He described the situation as unfortunate, arguing that many politicians now place greater faith in state institutions than in the will of voters.
“We are in a very unfortunate situation in the country where politicians are not too worried about the voters. They believe that the security and INEC are on their sides,” he stated.
Kwankwaso also suggested that desperation among political leaders is fueling the increasing number of defections ahead of the next general election.
“Because of desperation, many governors can do anything now,” he added.
His remarks come amid a series of high-profile defections and political realignments across the country, with several politicians moving into the APC as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
The comments are likely to generate fresh debate over electoral credibility, the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the role of security agencies during elections.
