Fresh International Attention on Benue Massacre Rekindles Debate Over Security and Religious Violence

A powerful message from a United States Congressman has reignited global attention on the persistent violence affecting Christian communities in Nigeria, with renewed calls for the international community not to turn a blind eye to the crisis.

One year after the devastating attack on Yelewata community in Benue State, United States Representative Riley Moore has urged world leaders and human rights advocates to remember the victims and confront what he described as a continuing tragedy.

The American lawmaker made the statement through his verified X account while commemorating the anniversary of the deadly attack that shocked Nigeria and drew condemnation from across the world.

According to Moore, the massacre remains one of the most painful reminders of the insecurity confronting vulnerable communities in the country.

“One year ago, Fulani Islamic terrorists stormed Yelewata, Nigeria, slaughtering more than 200 Christians,” the congressman wrote.

His remarks referenced the attack in Yelewata, located in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where more than two hundred people were reportedly killed after armed assailants invaded the community.

The attack generated widespread outrage at the time, particularly because many of the victims were said to be women and children who had sought refuge at a Catholic mission.

Moore described the victims as martyrs whose memories should not be forgotten.

“Most were women and children sheltering at a local Catholic mission. Today, we remember the martyrs. The world must not forget the Christian genocide in Nigeria,” he stated.

The comments have once again placed Nigeria’s security challenges under international scrutiny, particularly as concerns continue to grow over recurring attacks in several parts of the country.

Over the years, religious leaders, human rights organizations, and advocacy groups have repeatedly called for stronger action to protect vulnerable communities from violence, displacement, and loss of life.

The latest intervention by the US congressman is expected to fuel further discussions about the need for greater global attention to insecurity in Nigeria and the protection of religious freedoms.

As families continue to mourn loved ones lost in the Yelewata tragedy, many observers say the anniversary serves as a painful reminder that justice, accountability, and lasting peace remain urgent priorities.

For survivors and affected communities, the memories of that dark day remain fresh, while calls for action continue to grow louder both within Nigeria and beyond its borders.
