“Student Loans Are A Crime?” SDP Candidate Adebayo Ignites Fresh Education Debate Ahead of 2027

A major political conversation is beginning to gain momentum after a bold statement from the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 elections. Education, student welfare, and government responsibility have suddenly returned to the center of national discussion, and the remarks are already creating strong reactions.

Can a student loan policy designed to support education become a national controversy?

That question is now dominating conversations after Adewole Adebayo described the Federal Government’s student loan policy as a “crime” against Nigerians. Speaking after emerging as the SDP presidential candidate, Adebayo argued that education should be free, compulsory, and of high quality rather than financed through borrowing.

According to him, the idea of students taking loans to acquire education contradicts what he believes should be the government’s duty. He questioned why young Nigerians should borrow for education when many current leaders benefited from systems that offered free educational opportunities.

Adebayo also warned that a failure to invest adequately in education could create larger social consequences. He argued that weakened educational policies may contribute to unemployment, insecurity, and wasted talent while reducing opportunities for innovation and development.

Beyond education, the SDP candidate used the opportunity to explain what he called “kitchen table politics,” a governance approach he said focuses on everyday concerns affecting ordinary Nigerians, including food, transportation, healthcare, jobs, and survival.

He also criticized the ruling government over what he described as misplaced priorities, while insisting that political leadership should concentrate more on practical solutions than electoral victories.

As reactions continue to emerge, many observers are now asking a bigger question: Is the criticism of student loans a political statement designed for campaign momentum, or could it become a larger national debate on the future of education funding in Nigeria?

With 2027 political activities gradually gathering pace, discussions around education may have only just begun.
