The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on Nigerian leaders to adopt economic policies that directly improve the lives of citizens, insisting that the true measure of any government policy should be its ability to reduce poverty and raise living standards.
The respected monarch made the appeal during a conference in Kano on Thursday, where he stressed that Nigeria’s economic and political challenges require practical solutions that place the welfare of ordinary Nigerians above every other consideration.
Represented by the Danmadamin Kano and Professor of Economics at Bayero University, Kano, Abubakar Aliyu Sanusi, the emir described the conference as timely, noting that the country is facing serious economic hardship, insecurity and governance challenges.
According to Sanusi, economic policies should never be judged solely by statistics or financial indicators but by the positive impact they have on the daily lives of citizens.
“Economic policies should be assessed based on their impact on the welfare of citizens. Any economic policy that does not improve the welfare of the people is inherently ineffective,” he stated.
The emir also urged political leaders to learn from Nigeria’s history by strengthening democratic institutions, promoting justice and addressing longstanding national problems rather than allowing them to persist.
He identified insecurity, corruption, widespread poverty and poor infrastructure as some of the major obstacles slowing the country’s development, warning that these issues must be tackled decisively to achieve sustainable progress.
Sanusi further challenged politicians to move away from selfish interests and focus on genuine service to the people. He argued that leadership should not be based only on geographical power rotation but on competence, integrity and compassion.
Calling for greater national unity, the emir appealed to Nigerians across religious, ethnic and political divides to work together in building a more peaceful and prosperous country.
While acknowledging the progress Nigeria has made since independence, Sanusi maintained that political instability, ethnic tensions, insecurity and economic hardship continue to hinder national development, making it more important than ever for leaders to implement policies that genuinely improve the welfare of the people.
