President Bola Tinubu has delivered a strong message to journalists across Nigeria, declaring that while press freedom remains a cornerstone of democracy, it must never become a license to spread falsehood or mislead the public.

Speaking at the maiden State House Media Corps Presidential Dinner held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President reaffirmed his commitment to protecting media freedom while urging journalists to embrace professionalism, accuracy and ethical reporting in an era increasingly challenged by misinformation and artificial intelligence.

Tinubu described the media as a vital democratic institution that plays a complementary role alongside government by holding leaders accountable and informing citizens. He stressed that responsible journalism is essential to preserving public trust and strengthening democratic governance.

“I am an apostle of a free press,” the President said, recalling his long-standing support for media freedom. However, he cautioned that freedom of expression comes with responsibilities, insisting that journalists must verify facts before publication and avoid becoming channels for false or unverified information capable of harming national security.

The President expressed concern over the growing spread of fake news and AI-generated misinformation, urging media professionals to prioritize facts over sensational headlines and credibility over the race for clicks, likes and viral content.

According to Tinubu, government and the media have different but interconnected responsibilities. While government is expected to govern and explain its policies, the media must continue asking difficult questions and holding public officials accountable in the interest of the people.

He also defended the Cybercrimes Act, maintaining that the law is intended to safeguard Nigeria’s information space and protect citizens rather than suppress legitimate journalism or freedom of expression.

Beyond media issues, Tinubu said his administration’s economic reforms are beginning to produce encouraging results, citing improved public revenue, rising investor confidence and positive economic indicators. He also pointed to intensified military operations and stronger collaboration among security agencies as signs of progress in addressing insecurity across the country.

The President expressed hope that the annual State House Media Corps dinner would become a lasting platform for constructive engagement between the Presidency and the media, emphasizing that democracy thrives when truth, accountability and responsible journalism remain at the forefront.
