Nigerians may soon have a reason to celebrate at filling stations as growing optimism over a possible peace agreement between the United States and Iran fuels expectations of a sharp drop in petrol prices. Industry operators say that if the proposed truce holds and global crude oil prices continue to decline, the cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) could fall to around ₦900 per litre.
The prospect comes after international oil prices eased significantly following signs of reduced tensions in the Middle East. Analysts believe that reopening the Strait of Hormuz and stabilising energy markets could improve global crude supply, creating room for lower fuel prices in countries like Nigeria.
During months of heightened geopolitical tensions, crude prices surged above $100 per barrel, pushing petrol prices in Nigeria from around ₦830 to as high as ₦1,300 per litre. Diesel and aviation fuel also recorded substantial increases, placing additional pressure on businesses and consumers already battling inflation.
Now, with crude prices trending downward, market observers expect refiners and fuel marketers to adjust pump prices if the decline proves sustainable. Sources familiar with operations at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery suggest that while existing inventories purchased at higher prices may temporarily slow reductions, significantly cheaper petrol remains a realistic possibility if market conditions improve.
Petroleum marketers have echoed similar expectations, noting that fuel prices were considerably lower before the Middle East conflict disrupted oil markets. They believe continued stability could trigger another round of competition among suppliers, potentially benefiting consumers through lower retail prices.
Despite the optimism, industry experts caution that several variables—including global demand, exchange rates, logistics costs, and the durability of any diplomatic agreement—will ultimately determine pump prices in Nigeria.
For millions of motorists and businesses, however, the possibility of ₦900 petrol offers renewed hope that transport costs and daily expenses could ease in the months ahead, provided international developments continue in a positive direction.
