A fresh controversy is brewing within Nigeria’s political space as actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has publicly questioned reports surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential choice for the 2027 elections. His remarks have reignited the long-standing conversation about regional representation and equity in the country’s highest political offices.

According to reports, the ADC selected former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi from the South-South as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. While the party says the decision followed consultations with stakeholders and coalition partners, Okonkwo believes it could deepen feelings of exclusion in the South-East.

In a statement shared on social media, Okonkwo argued that the South-East remains the only geopolitical zone that has not produced either a President or Vice President since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999. He maintained that overlooking the region for the vice-presidential slot would undermine efforts to build a more inclusive political system.

The former Labour Party chieftain also pointed to the ADC’s history, noting that the party was founded by Ralph Nwosu from the South-East. In his view, the sacrifices made to strengthen the coalition should not result in further political marginalisation of the region.

Okonkwo revealed that his primary expectation from Atiku Abubakar, who has previously spoken about supporting a South-East presidency in the future, was the selection of a running mate from the region as a demonstration of that commitment. He further stated that if the reported vice-presidential choice is confirmed, he would find it difficult to campaign for a ticket that excludes the South-East from both the presidential and vice-presidential positions.

As discussions continue, the debate has expanded beyond party politics to broader questions about fairness, national unity, and power sharing. Whether the ADC revisits its strategy or stands by its reported decision, the controversy is likely to remain a key talking point on the road to the 2027 general election.
