“Nothing to Celebrate” — Coalition Declares Democracy Day a Day of Resistance Against Hardship and Insecurity
A major confrontation appears to be brewing between civil society groups and the Federal Government as prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana, musician Falz, labour activists, youth organizations, and community leaders have declared June 12 a day of nationwide protests across Nigeria.
The coalition, made up of civil society organizations, trade unions, social movements, faith-based groups, and community associations, says Nigerians have little reason to celebrate Democracy Day while millions continue to battle insecurity, hunger, unemployment, and rising living costs.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, the coalition accused the government of failing to adequately address worsening insecurity across the country, pointing to the growing number of kidnappings, killings, and terrorist attacks affecting communities nationwide.
According to the organizers, countless Nigerians remain in captivity across several states, including Oyo, Borno, Ekiti, and Kwara, while families continue to live in fear and uncertainty.
“There is nothing to celebrate,” the coalition declared, arguing that years of assurances from authorities have not translated into meaningful improvements in public safety.
Beyond security concerns, the group also took aim at the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming that the removal of fuel subsidies, repeated fuel price increases, currency devaluation, rising electricity tariffs, and the commercialization of essential services have pushed millions deeper into poverty.
The coalition noted that despite increased government revenues and allocations, many Nigerians are struggling more than ever before. Rising food prices, expensive transportation costs, and declining purchasing power have placed enormous pressure on households and businesses alike.
Small and medium-sized enterprises, they warned, are increasingly finding it difficult to survive amid soaring operational costs and unstable economic conditions.
The planned protest is expected to serve as a platform for citizens to demand immediate action on insecurity, the release of abducted Nigerians, and a review of economic policies affecting ordinary people.
With influential activists, labour leaders, and youth groups throwing their weight behind the movement, attention is now turning to June 12 itself.
Will the nationwide demonstrations become one of the largest public expressions of frustration in recent years, or will government intervention ease tensions before the planned action begins?
As Democracy Day approaches, all eyes are on the streets.
