Colombian music icon Shakira has opened up on why she selected Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Burna Boy for their hit 2026 FIFA World Cup anthem, “Dai Dai,” describing the African giant as the only artist she could imagine on the global record.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill, Shakira said she specifically wanted a powerful masculine voice to complement the song and believed Burna Boy was the perfect fit because of his unique energy and vocal style.
The singer admitted that collaborating with Burna Boy had been something she had wanted for a long time, revealing she was determined to make it happen.
“I have always loved Burna. I was obsessed with getting him on the track, so I called him,” Shakira said.
She added that once the collaboration came together, she knew she had made the right decision.
“I couldn’t imagine anybody else on it, actually,” she said, praising Burna Boy’s contribution to the World Cup anthem.
Since its release, “Dai Dai” has enjoyed remarkable global success, breaking several streaming and music industry records while becoming one of the biggest songs of the tournament.
The hit track became the first song to reach No. 1 on Spotify’s newly launched Global Music Video Chart, further cementing its worldwide appeal.
The collaboration also delivered historic milestones for Burna Boy, making him the first African artist to top the Apple Music Global Top Songs chart.
In addition, the Nigerian superstar set another major record by becoming the African artist with the highest monthly listeners in history, reaching 53 million listeners on Spotify and over 600 million on YouTube Music.
Burna Boy also made history as the first African artiste to perform at the newly introduced FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show, further strengthening his position as one of Africa’s biggest global music exports.
Shakira’s glowing comments have sparked excitement among fans, with many celebrating the successful partnership between the two international stars and the global recognition Burna Boy continues to receive.
