Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has revealed that he was falsely accused of masterminding the shocking abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the allegation as one of the most disturbing moments following the tragic incident.
The governor made the disclosure on Friday while inaugurating the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up to investigate the May 15, 2026 kidnapping of pupils and teachers in the Esiele and Yawata communities of Oriire Local Government Area.
Speaking at the Executive Council Chamber in Agodi, Ibadan, Makinde explained that the decision to establish the independent panel was aimed not only at uncovering the truth behind the incident but also at addressing claims that he had a hand in the abduction.
“They said I orchestrated the kidnap,” the governor stated, recalling the accusations that surfaced after the attack.
Makinde described the kidnapping as a direct assault on the right of every Nigerian child to receive an education in a safe environment, stressing that the incident shook the confidence of parents across the state.
According to him, although the safe rescue of the victims brought relief to families and residents, the government’s responsibility did not end there.
“We remain grateful for the safe return of the victims. Rescue brings relief, but truth brings closure. Accountability and reform restore public confidence and help prevent a recurrence,” he said.
The governor emphasized that the commission would independently investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, identify any institutional or operational failures, and recommend practical measures to strengthen school security and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Makinde added that justice is not only about identifying and punishing those responsible but also about learning from the tragedy to ensure innocent children, teachers, and communities are never exposed to such dangers again.
The inquiry is expected to provide answers to lingering questions surrounding one of Oyo State’s most disturbing security incidents while helping shape future policies aimed at protecting schools and restoring public trust.
