Governor Abba Yusuf Pays ₦5.6bn Gratuities to 1,198 Former Councillors in Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the release of ₦5.6 billion to settle severance and gratuity entitlements of 1,198 former councillors who served between 2018 and 2020 under the administration of ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The payment package also included accommodation and leave allowances.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor confirmed that this marks the second phase of payments for liabilities left behind by the previous administration.

Back in May 2025, the state government had released ₦1.8 billion to 903 former councillors during the first phase of settlement.

Outstanding ₦8.2bn to Be Paid in November

Speaking at the disbursement ceremony held at the Coronation Hall in Kano, Governor Yusuf explained that his administration inherited a ₦15.6 billion backlog.

He assured that the remaining ₦8.2 billion, meant for 1,371 more beneficiaries, would be cleared by November 2025.

“This payment is not just about money. It is about fairness, accountability, and restoring dignity to those who served our people at the grassroots,” Yusuf declared.

Beneficiaries Receive Alerts on the Spot

The atmosphere at the ceremony was filled with excitement as several beneficiaries confirmed receiving payment alerts instantly during the event.

The governor also advised the councillors to make good use of the funds, stressing that the payments should positively impact their families and communities.
