Mike Arnold’s Explosive Sokoto Declaration Sparks Fresh Self-Determination Debate

A powerful declaration released on Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day has reignited conversations about self-determination, freedom, and the future of Nigeria’s diverse ethnic nationalities.

Mike Arnold, a former mayor in the United States and founder of Africa Arise International, has stirred widespread attention with what he calls “The Sokoto Declaration: Principles for the Deliverance of the People.” Delivered from Blanco, Texas, through Biafra Radio, the message carried a bold claim that is already generating intense reactions across political and social circles.

At the heart of Arnold’s declaration is the assertion that self-determination is not a crime. According to him, this principle applies not only to Biafrans but also to the Yoruba, the peoples of the Middle Belt, northern minorities, and any group seeking the right to determine its political future through peaceful and democratic means.

The declaration arrives at a sensitive time, with debates surrounding national unity, restructuring, and the continued detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu remaining major national issues. Arnold argued that speaking truth should never be equated with terrorism and insisted that the right of people to express political aspirations should be protected.

What has particularly captured public attention is the declaration’s recurring message that “no one is coming to save us,” a phrase intended to encourage citizens to actively pursue change rather than wait for external intervention. Arnold further called for coordinated civic resistance, lawful democratic engagement, and an internationally supervised referendum that would allow citizens to determine their future.

The 15-point declaration also addressed governance, resource control, freedom of worship, voting rights, and the legitimacy of political authority. Throughout the statement, Arnold portrayed self-determination as a fundamental human right rooted in liberty, consent, and peaceful participation.

As reactions continue to emerge, the declaration has opened another chapter in Nigeria’s ongoing conversation about identity, governance, and national cohesion. Whether it becomes a catalyst for wider political engagement or another controversial moment in the nation’s history remains to be seen. One thing is certain—the debate it has ignited is far from over.
