Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has stirred fresh political conversations after accepting an appointment from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, less than a year after publicly declaring that he had no interest in serving in the current administration.
The development has surprised many Nigerians, especially those who recall Fayose’s strong remarks during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television in October 2025. At the time, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain disclosed that President Tinubu had already offered him a government appointment, but he respectfully turned it down.
Explaining his decision then, Fayose insisted that his years in public service were behind him, saying he had no desire to return to government after completing two terms as Governor of Ekiti State.
“At 65, I would rather stay at home and focus on other responsibilities. I have served my state well as a two-term governor and I am satisfied with my contributions,” Fayose had said.
He also emphasized that his cordial relationship with President Tinubu should not be mistaken for political allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to him, his support or criticism of government policies had always been based on personal conviction rather than the expectation of political rewards.
However, the narrative changed on Monday when the Presidency announced Fayose’s appointment as Chairman of the Board of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), a key federal agency responsible for expanding electricity access across Nigeria.
The announcement was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, as part of a list of 26 new appointments into the boards of 10 federal agencies and commissions. The Presidency confirmed that all appointments took immediate effect.
Fayose’s decision to accept the role has quickly reignited political debate, with many Nigerians comparing his latest move to his earlier public position. While some believe he simply had a change of heart, others see the appointment as another reminder that political decisions can evolve with time and circumstance.
