‘Cobhams Changed My Life’ — Omawumi

Nigerian singer and songwriter Omawumi Megbele has credited award-winning producer Cobhams Asuquo as a key influence in shaping her music career.

In a recent interview with HipTV, the Bottom Belle crooner recounted her first encounter with Cobhams shortly after her Idols West Africa experience. According to her, Cobhams took a chance on her talent by offering an opportunity to record a song, even without knowing what the outcome would be.

“Cobhams gave me one of my first opportunities outside Idol West Africa,” Omawumi revealed. “He told me to just go with it, and that project became a major turning point for me.”

The collaboration proved to be a breakthrough, leading to her first major endorsement deal, which lasted for two years. “I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years,” she said.

Omawumi further disclosed that the project’s success opened doors for her to perform alongside P-Square at major concerts across multiple locations.

Describing Cobhams as a mentor and creative genius, she added, “He taught me nuances in delivery and posture. He helped me understand how to express emotion through performance.”

Omawumi’s heartfelt reflections underscore the impact of mentorship and collaboration in Nigeria’s thriving music industry and celebrate Cobhams Asuquo’s enduring legacy as one of the country’s most influential producers.
