NUT Insists Education Must Continue Despite Security Challenges in Borno

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared that schools in Borno State will not be shut down despite the growing security concerns affecting parts of the region. According to the union, closing schools would hand a major victory to terrorists whose goal is to disrupt education and spread fear among communities.

Speaking in Maiduguri, the National Publicity Secretary of the NUT, Comrade Yusuf Tom, emphasized that the union has not directed any school closure in the state. He stressed that teachers remain committed to keeping classrooms open and ensuring that children continue to receive an education regardless of the challenges posed by insecurity.

Tom explained that the primary objective of insurgent groups is to create fear and force educational institutions to suspend operations. He noted that yielding to such pressure would only encourage further attacks on the education sector and negatively affect pupils, parents, and teachers.

While acknowledging the dangers faced by educators and students, the NUT maintained that the solution lies in stronger security measures rather than shutting down schools. The union is urging government authorities at all levels to intensify efforts to safeguard learning environments and secure the release of abducted pupils, students, and education workers.

The teachers’ union also announced its participation in nationwide solidarity rallies aimed at drawing attention to the increasing incidents of kidnappings and attacks on schools across Nigeria. The demonstrations are intended to pressure authorities into taking decisive action to restore confidence in the nation’s education system.

According to the NUT, education remains a fundamental human right that should not be denied because of insecurity. The union reiterated its commitment to defending every child’s right to learn while advocating for improved protection for schools and teachers nationwide.

As concerns over school safety continue to grow, the NUT’s position highlights the ongoing struggle to balance security challenges with the need to maintain access to education, especially in conflict-affected communities.
