Atiku Rejects ADC Primary Manipulation Claims as Political Tensions Rise

Nigeria’s political landscape is heating up ahead of the 2027 general elections following a sharp exchange between former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

The latest controversy began after Lawal alleged during a television interview that Atiku manipulated the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary process. However, Atiku’s camp has now issued a strong response, dismissing the accusations as unsubstantiated and lacking credible evidence.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that Nigerians who followed the interview would have noticed that despite the seriousness of the allegations, no proof was presented. According to the statement, Lawal failed to provide documents, recordings, witness accounts, petitions, or any verifiable material to support his claims.

The response drew attention to what it described as contradictions in Lawal’s argument. Atiku’s team questioned how a politician portrayed as politically weak and unpopular could simultaneously be accused of orchestrating a nationwide operation capable of influencing thousands of party members across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards.

Beyond the primary election dispute, the statement also referenced comments allegedly made by Lawal regarding his relationship with President Bola Tinubu, suggesting that Nigerians should evaluate the implications of those remarks independently.

Atiku’s camp further claimed that the former SGF’s criticisms appear driven more by disappointment than facts. The statement argued that political outcomes unfavorable to Lawal are increasingly being described as conspiracies without supporting evidence.

Defending Atiku’s political legacy, the former vice president’s team highlighted his involvement in economic reforms, telecommunications liberalization, private-sector development, and educational investments, insisting that his influence in Nigerian politics remains significant.

In what was described as its final response on the matter, Atiku’s camp stated that Nigerians have heard both sides of the argument and are capable of reaching their own conclusions. As political activities intensify ahead of 2027, the clash between the two northern political figures is expected to generate further debate within opposition circles and across the wider political landscape.
