NURTW Leader Shamsideen Adio Arrested for Alleged Murder and Assault in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Shamsideen Adio, a prominent leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), following allegations of murder and assault.

Adio, also known as Shameleon, is currently detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti-Yaba as investigations into the serious charges proceed.

According to Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Babaseyi Oluseyi, the 55-year-old suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, inflicting severe injuries with a helmet and his fists. The victim was rushed to the hospital and is reportedly on oxygen while receiving ongoing treatment.

In a statement, Oluseyi confirmed, “The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Samsideen Oladiti ‘m’, popularly known as ‘Shameleon’, aged 55, in connection with two violent crimes on Lagos Island involving a case of murder and another of assault occasioning harm.”

Furthermore, a separate complaint against Adio was filed regarding an incident on August 28, 2025, where he allegedly used a metallic ring to strike another man multiple times, resulting in severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim succumbed to his injuries on September 17, 2025, and his body has been sent for autopsy.

The news of the victim’s death sparked protests at Adio’s office in Sandgrouse Market, where supporters of the deceased set fire to two of Adio’s motorcycles, escalating tensions in the area.

In response, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh deployed mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to restore order. He reassured the public that Adio remains in custody and will face prosecution once investigations are complete.

Jimoh urged Lagos residents to maintain calm and abide by the law, emphasizing the police command’s commitment to delivering justice.
