Nigerian singer Olusipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has candidly shared his experiences of turning down lucrative endorsement deals worth millions of naira due to his strong religious beliefs. In a series of Instagram stories, the ‘Who’s Your Guy’ hitmaker disclosed that these deals were rejected because they conflicted with his Christian values.
Spyro explained that he has been personally funding his concerts, as many brands are hesitant to associate with him due to his outspoken advocacy for his faith. The 27-year-old artist expressed that his greatest challenges come not from external sources but from fellow Christians, whom he considers to be his family.
“Let me be vulnerable with you guys here today… The biggest temptations I have had has been within the last two years of my life knowing I can afford some certain lifestyle and can also get away with many things yet choosing not to,” he stated.
He continued, “Turning down endorsements worth several millions because they are Antichrist ain’t easy, sponsoring my shows myself because most brands don’t wanna associate with the Jesus brand is hard, and in all of these the family (Christians) that should cover are my greatest enemies.”
Spyro also addressed the criticisms he faces, saying, “So when people call me names and call me hypocrite, I just smile. How can I be acting perfect when I know I am far from it? I have my struggles and have considered giving it all up several times, but when I think of what JESUS himself went through just for me, it renews my strength.”
He emphasized the difficulty of maintaining his faith, stating, “But to be honest with ya’ll it ain’t easy bearing the flag like ya’ll think it is. I suffer for it every day, and if not that I am sure that JESUS IS REAL, I would have backed down.”
Spyro concluded by encouraging others facing similar temptations, reminding them that “Jesus understands exactly how we feel,” and highlighting the importance of the Holy Spirit as a source of strength.
