Fresh controversy has emerged after Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, alleged that President Bola Tinubu is being shielded from the harsh realities facing Nigerians by people surrounding him.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, the respected cleric claimed that some individuals close to the President are presenting an overly optimistic view of the country’s situation, making it difficult for him to fully appreciate the challenges confronting ordinary citizens.
The remarks come shortly after the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where national issues, including the economy and security, were discussed.
According to Cardinal Onaiyekan, one of the reasons for the meeting was to present the government with what he described as the true state of affairs in Nigeria, rather than the positive narrative allegedly being relayed by presidential aides and associates.
“That is one of the things that worries us: there are so many people hanging around Mr President, giving him a rosy picture of what the country is, which it is not,” the Cardinal stated.
He explained that the bishops considered it their responsibility to honestly communicate the realities confronting Nigerians, stressing that the Church could not remain silent while citizens continue to grapple with economic hardship, insecurity, and other pressing national concerns.
“We felt that indeed, we have the obligation to help him appreciate the reality of the situation in which we find ourselves,” he added.
Onaiyekan further suggested that President Tinubu’s response during the meeting indicated that the issues raised were not necessarily what the administration expected to hear.
The comments have already sparked widespread reactions across political and religious circles, with many Nigerians debating whether the President is receiving accurate feedback about conditions across the country.
As conversations around governance and economic reforms continue to dominate public discourse, the Cardinal’s remarks are expected to fuel further discussions on the role of advisers and the importance of honest feedback in national leadership.
