Barely two weeks before the highly anticipated Osun State governorship election, the Nigeria Police Force has made a dramatic leadership change by deploying a new Commissioner of Police to the state.
The Force has appointed Samuel Erale as the new Commissioner of Police for Osun State, replacing CP Ibrahim Gotan, in a move that has already sparked fresh political discussions ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Confirming the development on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Osun State, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said Erale has been assigned to coordinate security operations and oversee policing during the crucial election period.
Although the Nigeria Police Force did not officially disclose the reason behind Gotan’s sudden redeployment, the decision comes after months of criticism directed at his leadership by the Osun State Government, political stakeholders, and civil society organizations.
Critics had repeatedly accused the former police commissioner of bias in the handling of politically sensitive matters, allegations that fueled tension as the state prepares for one of its most closely watched elections.
The redeployment also comes less than 24 hours after the release of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Teslim Igbalaye, who was arrested alongside five other individuals during a police operation linked to allegations of vote-buying and harbouring a wanted suspect.
The arrest generated widespread controversy, with the state government and the ruling Accord Party accusing security agencies of targeting government officials in an attempt to influence the political atmosphere ahead of the election.
With a new police commissioner now in charge, attention will shift to how security agencies manage the governorship poll and ensure a peaceful, free, and credible electoral process.
Political observers believe the appointment of Samuel Erale could play a significant role in restoring public confidence as candidates intensify campaigns for what is expected to be a fiercely contested election.
