The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has made a passionate appeal to Nigerians to stop referring to kidnappers, bandits, and terrorists as “Fulani herdsmen,” insisting that criminals should simply be identified as criminals, regardless of their ethnic background.
The respected traditional ruler made the remarks on Wednesday while declaring open the 2026 National Conference of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Abuja.
Addressing participants, the Sultan said it is unfair to judge millions of peaceful Fulani people based on the actions of a small number of individuals involved in criminal activities. He emphasized that every ethnic group has both law-abiding citizens and those who break the law, stressing that crime should never be linked to an entire community.
“I want to assure all Nigerians that we mean well for everybody in Nigeria. We mean no harm to anybody,” the Sultan said, urging the public to avoid generalizations that could fuel division and mistrust.
He also pledged the full support of Fulani communities in the fight against insecurity, assuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies that they are ready to work together to identify and remove criminals hiding within their settlements.
“We are 100 per cent ready to work with him and other security agencies to flush out criminals from our enclaves,” he stated.
The Sultan further commended President Tinubu for establishing the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, describing the move as a significant step toward improving Nigeria’s livestock industry and promoting sustainable development in the sector.
Also speaking at the event, the National President of MACBAN, Baba Othman Ngelzarma, condemned terrorism, kidnapping, cattle rustling, and banditry, insisting that no ethnic group or profession should be blamed for the actions of a few individuals.
The latest remarks have reignited national conversations about security, ethnic profiling, and the importance of distinguishing criminality from ethnic identity as Nigeria continues efforts to address insecurity across the country.
