The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing the Federal Government of undermining democracy and governing Nigeria with what it described as unchecked impunity.
The strong criticism came from the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, during an interview on Symfoni TV, where he claimed that the Tinubu-led administration has repeatedly ignored constitutional principles meant to protect Nigeria’s democracy.
According to Abdullahi, the separation of powers among the executive, legislature, and judiciary has been weakened, alleging that the three arms of government now appear to be working in the interest of the President rather than serving as independent institutions.
He argued that the National Assembly, under Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has failed to perform its constitutional responsibility of holding the executive accountable. Abdullahi claimed this has created an environment where government actions face little or no effective oversight.
The ADC spokesman also criticized the administration’s handling of national budgets, alleging that multiple budgets are being operated simultaneously without full implementation. He further referenced reports alleging trillions of naira in unbudgeted government spending, questioning whether such actions comply with the country’s financial laws.
Abdullahi also accused the government of repeatedly disregarding court orders and claimed that opposition political parties have come under increasing pressure through legal and political actions. According to him, these developments pose a serious challenge to democratic governance and the rule of law.
He maintained that the constitutional system of checks and balances exists to prevent any arm of government from becoming too powerful, warning that weakening those institutions could have long-term consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.
The comments have sparked fresh political debate as supporters and critics of the Tinubu administration continue to disagree over the government’s performance, the role of the National Assembly, and the state of democratic institutions in the country.
