Fresh political debate has erupted after former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad reacted to reports of a power-sharing agreement between Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, suggesting that the former Kano State governor already knows their chances of winning the 2027 presidential election are slim.
The discussion followed comments attributed to Kwankwaso, who disclosed in an interview that he and Peter Obi reached a written agreement regarding their political future under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Kwankwaso, the agreement provides that Peter Obi will contest the 2027 presidential election as the party’s candidate for a single four-year term. If they emerge victorious, Obi would serve only one term before supporting Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition in 2031.
Reacting to the development on his verified X account, Bashir Ahmad said the arrangement appeared to reflect Kwankwaso’s understanding of the political realities ahead of the election.
“I read that Senator Kwankwaso said the agreement is for Mr Peter Obi to be on the ballot in 2027 and, regardless of the outcome, he will not contest in 2031 but instead support Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition,” Ahmad wrote.
He went further to add, “I like how Kwankwaso entered this political marriage with a clear long-term political strategy in mind, knowing that 2027 will not be feasible for them.”
The statement has since generated mixed reactions online, with supporters and critics of both camps offering different interpretations of Ahmad’s comments. While some believe the agreement demonstrates long-term political planning, others argue that it is too early to predict the outcome of the 2027 elections.
Peter Obi and Kwankwaso officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in May after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing persistent internal divisions and legal disputes within the party.
