Former Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has strongly criticized Argentina’s conduct following their defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, saying Spain deserved to win after playing positive football while condemning the post-match clash involving several Argentine players.
The former Nigeria international did not hide his disappointment after witnessing the heated scenes that erupted immediately after Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in New Jersey. Instead of celebrating an exciting World Cup final, fans were left watching ugly confrontations between players and coaching staff from both nations.
Videos circulating online showed Argentina defender Leandro Paredes and teammate Nahuel Molina allegedly striking Spain stars Eric García and Rodri during the altercation. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also seen in footage appearing to hit Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo, further fueling criticism of the South American side.
Reacting on the Sunday Oliseh Global Football Insights show, the former Juventus midfielder said Spain’s triumph was not only deserved but important for the image of football.
“Thank God that Spain won the World Cup on Sunday,” Oliseh declared.
He argued that Spain’s attacking style and positive approach to the game represented the kind of football that should be rewarded on the biggest stage, while accusing Argentina of displaying what he described as “negative football.”
“I’m telling you for the interest of football, it was important because the team came out playing positive football, winning the World Cup because the negative football that the Argentine puts out, it is a bad advertisement for football,” he said.
Oliseh also expressed disappointment over the physical confrontation that followed the final whistle, insisting that such behavior had no place after a World Cup final.
“When I saw Argentina players fighting after the game when the game was over, you don’t fight your opponent after the World Cup final. I just think it is great that Spain won,” he added.
His comments have since sparked debate among football fans, with many agreeing that sportsmanship should always prevail regardless of the outcome of such a prestigious tournament.
