The political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 presidential election became even more heated after the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, declared that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima do not represent a “Muslim-Muslim ticket” but what he described as a “zero-zero ticket.”

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Adebayo argued that Nigerians are no longer interested in religious sentiments but are instead searching for leaders who can deliver justice, competence and good governance.

According to him, the debate over a Muslim-Muslim ticket was created to distract Nigerians from the real issues affecting the country. He insisted that from the perspective of Islamic teachings, leadership should never be determined by religion but by fairness, justice and the ability to govern effectively.

Adebayo explained that Islamic jurisprudence places greater importance on selecting qualified and trustworthy individuals for public office rather than choosing leaders based solely on shared religious beliefs. He argued that justice remains the central principle expected from any leader.

In one of his strongest remarks, the SDP flag bearer described the Tinubu-Shettima administration as a “zero-zero ticket,” claiming that many Nigerians, including some who once defended the Muslim-Muslim arrangement, are now demanding justice.

He specifically referenced former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, noting that despite being one of the strongest supporters of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, he and members of his family are now seeking justice. According to Adebayo, this reflects what he described as the irony of promoting religious politics over competent leadership.

The SDP candidate maintained that ordinary Nigerians are more concerned about economic hardship, insecurity and good governance than the religious identity of political candidates. He insisted that the country needs a righteous and capable leader who can unite the nation and address its pressing challenges.

As political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, Adebayo’s comments are expected to fuel fresh conversations over religion, governance and leadership, issues that are already shaping Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
