Fresh political tension is brewing ahead of the 2027 general election as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a strong warning to Nigeria’s judiciary, urging judges not to be used to undermine the country’s democratic system.

The Deputy National Financial Secretary of the ADC, Oladimeji Fabiyi, made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV while reacting to the recent Court of Appeal judgment that upheld an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the party’s state congresses.

Fabiyi accused the current administration of attempting to weaken opposition parties, alleging that efforts are being made to create a one-party state ahead of the next presidential election. According to him, the judiciary must remain independent and avoid actions capable of eroding public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

In one of his strongest statements, the ADC chieftain urged the courts not to become instruments for what he described as attempts by President Bola Tinubu to destroy Nigeria’s democracy. He insisted that the opposition would continue to resist any move capable of undermining democratic values.

Fabiyi further claimed that even during military rule, the judiciary was never subjected to the level of pressure and criticism it currently faces. He argued that Nigerians deserve an independent judicial system that protects justice rather than political interests.

Despite the court ruling affecting the ADC’s state congresses, Fabiyi maintained that the party remains focused on its activities nationwide. He disclosed that the party’s legal team is already handling all pending matters before the courts while political mobilisation continues across the country.

He also insisted that the alleged pressure is not directed at the ADC alone, claiming that other opposition parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have also faced similar political challenges.

As political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027, Fabiyi called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and closely monitor developments within the country’s democratic institutions. His remarks have already sparked fresh debate about the role of the judiciary, opposition politics and the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
