Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has hinted that the 2027 general election could be his last attempt at becoming Nigeria’s president, citing the country’s zoning arrangement and his age as major factors.
Obi made the revelation during an interview with media personality Rufai Oseni, where he spoke candidly about his political future and the realities surrounding Nigeria’s power-sharing tradition. His comments have quickly sparked conversations among supporters and political observers, with many wondering what his decision could mean for the country’s political landscape.
According to Obi, his decision will largely depend on the outcome of the 2027 election. However, he explained that Nigeria’s unwritten zoning formula, which rotates the presidency between the North and the South, makes another presidential bid after 2027 highly unlikely.
The former governor recalled being asked a similar question by a secondary school student. In response, he explained that if he does not emerge president in 2027, the next opportunity for the South to produce a president may not come until years later after power rotates back to the North.
