Fresh drama has emerged over the ongoing prosecution of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as his wife, Hajiya Asiya El-Rufai, publicly appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure her husband receives fair treatment and his constitutional rights while facing trial.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday alongside El-Rufai’s second wife, Aichatou, Asiya insisted that the family was not asking President Tinubu to halt the prosecution but to ensure the former governor is treated in accordance with the law.

Her appeal came shortly after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) confirmed the arrest of El-Rufai’s personal physician, Prof. Bello Abubakar, in connection with the ongoing investigation.

According to Asiya, El-Rufai, who she said suffers from high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels, has been denied adequate medical care while in custody. She called on the authorities to allow him access to his personal doctor, legal team, family members and bail if he qualifies under the law.

“We are not asking you to stop the prosecution. We are only asking that he be allowed to enjoy the basic human rights guaranteed by the Constitution,” she said.

In an emotional appeal, Asiya reminded President Tinubu of the political support she and her husband gave him during the 2023 presidential election campaign, asking whether the family’s current ordeal was a fair reward for their loyalty.

“Mr. President, I campaigned for you across Kaduna State. My husband stood by your side. Is this what our family deserves?” she asked.

She also claimed that the restrictions placed on the former governor have made it difficult for him to prepare his legal defence, while expressing concern over the emotional trauma the family has endured since his detention.

The former governor’s wife further questioned why his personal physician was allegedly prevented from seeing him and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a medical report reportedly issued by the National Hospital, Abuja.

As legal proceedings continue, the family says it remains committed to allowing the courts determine El-Rufai’s fate but insists he should be afforded every constitutional right guaranteed to every Nigerian citizen.
