Nigeria’s political scene has taken another dramatic twist as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) announced that it has successfully uploaded the name of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal despite the recent court judgment ordering the party’s deregistration. The move comes after the party filed both an appeal and an application for a stay of execution, setting the stage for what could become one of the biggest legal and political battles ahead of the 2027 general election.
National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, revealed that the party had formally served INEC with its appeal and stay of execution application, urging the electoral body to act strictly within the provisions of the law while the courts determine the matter.
According to Dickson, the NDC remains a legally recognized political party pending the outcome of the appeal. He stressed that the party participated fully in the electoral process, conducted its primary elections under INEC supervision, and was subsequently granted access to the commission’s candidate nomination portal.
He disclosed that both his own name and that of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have already been uploaded to the portal, while the vice-presidential candidate’s details will be submitted once documentation is completed. He also noted that the party remains within INEC’s official timetable for candidate submissions.
Dickson appealed to party members to remain calm, assuring aspirants and supporters that there was no reason for panic despite the legal challenge. He explained that reconciliation efforts had commenced following the primaries and promised that unsuccessful aspirants would be integrated into campaign committees and other party structures.
The development significantly raises the stakes ahead of 2027, with the courts now expected to determine whether the NDC can continue its participation in the electoral process. Until then, the party insists it remains fully operational and determined to contest the next general election with Peter Obi as its presidential flag bearer.
