A statement by Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has generated widespread attention after he expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would remain under divine guidance and continue leading the country until 2031.

Umahi made the remarks during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects in Lagos State, including the Carter Bridge, which is scheduled for reconstruction beginning next week. While discussing the administration’s development agenda, the minister said he believes God will continue to strengthen and guide the President in addressing Nigeria’s challenges.

According to Umahi, the same divine providence that brought Tinubu into office would sustain him in confronting issues such as insecurity and national development. He urged Nigerians to support the current administration, emphasizing that effective governance requires cooperation between leaders and citizens.

The minister also observed that no government welcomes instability but argued that every responsible administration must face emerging crises directly. In his view, tackling security concerns and other pressing national issues remains a key responsibility of leadership, regardless of the circumstances surrounding those challenges.

Umahi further expressed optimism that projects initiated under the current administration would be completed successfully. Referring to the reconstruction of Carter Bridge, he disclosed that the project is expected to be finished within three years and forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure development plan.

His comments regarding President Tinubu’s tenure reflect his personal belief and political confidence rather than any constitutional determination. Under Nigeria’s Constitution, presidential tenure and eligibility are governed by legal provisions and the electoral process.

The remarks have already sparked conversations among political observers and citizens, with supporters viewing them as a vote of confidence in the administration while others interpret them as part of the growing political discourse ahead of future elections.

As major infrastructure projects continue across the country, statements from senior government officials are likely to remain under public scrutiny, particularly when they touch on governance, leadership, and the nation’s long-term political outlook.
