A dramatic political challenge has reignited debate ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections after Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi declared that he would immediately stop campaigning if anyone could prove he diverted even 1% of donations made to the Labour Party during the 2023 general election.
Speaking during an interview with Nevon Media hosted by journalist Oseni Rufai, Obi firmly rejected allegations circulating on social media and in political discussions that he and activist Aisha Yesufu misappropriated funds intended for the Labour Party’s campaign activities.
The former Anambra State governor described the accusations as baseless and questioned the existence of any evidence supporting the claims. He challenged his critics to present verifiable proof of financial wrongdoing, insisting that no such evidence exists.
Obi stated that he plans to confront those making the allegations and is prepared to include his accusers in legal or public accountability processes if necessary. According to him, transparency and integrity remain central to his political career, making the accusations particularly significant.
His strongest statement came when he pledged that he would abandon his political campaign entirely if credible evidence showed that he personally took even a fraction of the donations contributed to the Labour Party.
The allegations involving Obi and Aisha Yesufu have circulated in public discourse, but no court ruling or officially verified findings establishing wrongdoing by either individual were cited during the interview. The comments therefore remain part of an ongoing political controversy rather than proven facts.
As Nigeria’s political environment becomes increasingly active ahead of the next election cycle, financial accountability and campaign transparency are expected to remain major issues for voters and political parties alike. Obi’s latest remarks have intensified calls for evidence-based debate, placing the spotlight squarely on those making the allegations and challenging them to substantiate their claims.
Whether the controversy fades or develops further, the outspoken declaration has already become one of the most closely watched political statements in the lead-up to 2027.
