What appeared to be ordinary alcoholic beverages on store shelves may have been part of a dangerous underground operation as police in Anambra State uncovered a hidden factory allegedly producing counterfeit drinks with hazardous chemicals. The discovery has sparked fresh fears over consumer safety and the scale of fake product distribution in Nigeria.
Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command arrested two suspects, identified as 42-year-old Ikechukwu Okeke and 38-year-old Okeke Chukwuemeka, during an intelligence-led raid carried out by the Rapid Response Squad and the Anti-Violent Crime Unit. The operation reportedly took place in the early hours of Sunday, June 15, 2026.
According to police authorities, the breakthrough followed credible intelligence pointing to a syndicate involved in the production and distribution of adulterated alcoholic beverages across the state. What officers uncovered was described as a fully operational but illegal production site disguised to evade detection.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were part of a wider criminal network specializing in the counterfeiting of popular alcohol brands. These fake products were allegedly repackaged and circulated into markets where unsuspecting consumers purchased them as genuine products.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement and led officers to the secret facility. Inside, police discovered a disturbing stockpile of fake alcoholic beverages, counterfeit labels, empty bottles, packaging materials, and chemicals believed to be used in production.
Among the recovered items were adulterated versions of well-known brands including schnapps and cream-based alcoholic drinks, raising serious concerns about potential health risks such as poisoning, organ failure, and long-term toxicity.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that all recovered exhibits have been secured for forensic analysis while investigations continue to track down other members of the suspected syndicate and their distribution network.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised the operatives for what he described as a decisive and professional operation. He also issued a strong warning to individuals involved in counterfeit consumable products, stressing that the Command will intensify intelligence-led policing to protect public health and safety.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, noting that community cooperation is critical in dismantling networks that endanger lives through the circulation of fake consumables.
As investigations deepen, the shocking discovery has once again highlighted the hidden dangers in the market and the urgent need for stronger enforcement against counterfeit product manufacturers operating in the shadows.
