Former Presidential Candidate Sounds Alarm as Killing of Retired Military Officer Sparks National Outrage
The reported death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of kidnappers has triggered fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, with Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi describing the incident as a painful reminder that no one appears safe anymore.
In a strongly worded reaction posted on his verified X account, Obi lamented the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of the former Director of Defence Information, calling it a national tragedy and a disturbing reflection of the insecurity spreading across the country.
For many Nigerians, the incident carries a painful irony.
Major General Abubakar spent decades serving in the Nigerian Armed Forces, helping to defend the nation and protect citizens from threats. Yet, according to reports, the retired military officer reportedly lost his life while being held captive by the same criminal elements that continue to terrorize communities nationwide.
Reacting to the development, Obi said the tragedy goes beyond the loss of one individual and highlights a broader failure to guarantee the safety of citizens.
“Nigeria cannot continue like this,” Obi declared.
The former Anambra State governor noted that before receiving news of Abubakar’s death, he had also been briefed about fresh bandit attacks in Sokoto and Kwara States.
According to reports cited by Obi, armed bandits allegedly blocked a market route in Sokoto and abducted traders, while attackers reportedly invaded communities in Kwara State, kidnapping residents and killing innocent citizens.
He argued that these incidents are not isolated cases but signs of a growing security emergency that demands urgent intervention.
Obi stressed that when farmers can no longer safely access their farms, traders fear traveling to markets, communities live under constant threat, and even retired senior military officers become targets, it becomes clear that the country faces a serious crisis.
The NDC presidential candidate also called on the Federal Government and security agencies to move beyond routine statements and embrace more proactive security strategies.
According to him, intelligence-driven operations, improved technology, stronger coordination among security agencies, and decisive action are necessary to reverse the trend.
He maintained that security remains the foremost responsibility of government and warned that every life lost to insecurity represents a painful failure of leadership.
As Nigerians continue to mourn the late military officer, the tragedy has once again reignited questions about how best to confront the growing threat posed by bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists across the nation.
