Political Drama Deepens as Okonkwo Defies N5 Billion Lawsuit Threat
The political confrontation between former allies Peter Obi and Kenneth Okonkwo has taken a dramatic new turn, with the actor-turned-politician releasing what he describes as documentary evidence to support his allegations against the NDC presidential candidate and certain party leaders.
The development comes just days after Obi’s legal team issued a pre-litigation notice demanding N5 billion in damages and a public apology over what they described as defamatory statements made by Okonkwo during a television interview.
Rather than backing down, Okonkwo has chosen to intensify the battle.
In a series of posts published on social media, the former spokesperson and political ally of Obi claimed that evidence in his possession supports allegations that some aspirants were pressured into making payments during the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primary election process.
The controversy stems from comments Okonkwo made during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, where he alleged that House of Representatives aspirants were asked to pay substantial sums after already paying official party fees.
While Obi’s legal team has strongly denied the allegations and described them as false, malicious, and unsupported, Okonkwo insists he possesses information that justifies his claims.
At the center of the latest revelation is Obunike Ohaegbu, an NDC House of Representatives aspirant for the Nnewi North/South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency. According to Okonkwo, private conversations between him and the aspirant paint a different picture from public statements made afterward.
Okonkwo alleged that although Ohaegbu later appeared to soften his criticism of the party in media interviews, he had privately described Obi as a central figure in the alleged payment arrangement.
The claims have further intensified an already volatile political dispute that is attracting attention across Nigeria’s political landscape. Supporters of both men have taken opposing positions, while many observers are now waiting to see whether the disagreement will ultimately be settled in court.
What makes the situation even more intriguing is that both figures once worked closely together and publicly supported the same political cause. Today, however, they appear locked in a confrontation that could expose deeper divisions within the opposition movement.
With legal threats, counterclaims, and alleged evidence now on the table, the next chapter in this political showdown could prove even more dramatic than the last.
