As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, a fresh warning from a senior political figure has reignited concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy. Former Edo State governor and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), John Odigie-Oyegun, has expressed deep concern over the growing wave of defections, resignations, and political realignments sweeping across the country.
Speaking in Benin, Odigie-Oyegun argued that the increasing rate at which politicians abandon their parties points to deeper structural problems within Nigeria’s political system. According to him, the trend raises critical questions about whether many political actors are genuinely committed to national development or simply pursuing personal ambitions ahead of the next election cycle.
The former governor noted that frequent party switching often follows disagreements and political calculations rather than ideological differences or a desire to improve governance. He warned that such developments could weaken public confidence in the political process at a time when Nigerians are demanding solutions to pressing challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, and economic hardship.
Odigie-Oyegun maintained that if political leaders were truly focused on rescuing the nation, much of the current political maneuvering would not be taking place. He stressed that the political class appears increasingly disconnected from the realities facing ordinary citizens, whose primary concerns revolve around survival, security, and economic stability.
The ADC leader also challenged opposition figures to examine their motivations and ensure that their actions are aimed at addressing the needs of Nigerians rather than advancing personal interests. According to him, meaningful political engagement should be centered on providing credible alternatives and practical solutions to national problems.
Despite his concerns, Odigie-Oyegun expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria’s democracy. He stated that the opposition still has a realistic chance of challenging the ruling party successfully if electoral institutions remain independent, transparent, and fair.
With political alliances shifting rapidly and fresh defections emerging almost weekly, many observers believe the road to 2027 could become one of the most unpredictable political contests in Nigeria’s recent history.
