Hidden Cargo Exposed: NDLEA Discovers Drugs Inside Water Purifier Machines
What appeared to be ordinary household appliances arriving from Europe turned out to be something far more alarming. In a major breakthrough, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered illicit drug consignments carefully concealed inside water purifier machines shipped from the Netherlands to Lagos.
The shocking discovery was made on May 26 during an operation at a courier company in Lagos. According to the NDLEA, the shipment contained three kilograms of ketamine and 199 grams of MDMA, popularly known as Ecstasy, hidden within the machines in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
But that was only the beginning.
As investigations and operations intensified across the country, NDLEA operatives recorded a series of major seizures and arrests. In Kaduna State, authorities arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, alongside another suspect, Salomi Ezekiel, after recovering a staggering 1,246 kilograms of skunk from their residence in the Gonin Gora area.
In another development, officers patrolling the Abuja-Kaduna Highway intercepted a suspect allegedly transporting 380 rounds of military-grade ammunition destined for Katsina State. The suspect and recovered ammunition were handed over to the relevant security agency for further investigation.
The crackdown extended to Niger State, where intelligence-led operations led to the discovery of a warehouse containing 457 kilograms of skunk. A suspect was later apprehended in connection with the seizure. In Enugu State, NDLEA officers intercepted a commercial vehicle carrying thousands of tramadol pills, pentazocine ampoules, and bromazepam, resulting in another arrest.
Beyond enforcement actions, the agency continues to strengthen its War Against Drug Abuse campaign through awareness programs in schools and communities across Nigeria. These initiatives aim to educate young people and reduce the demand for illicit substances.
Commending officers involved in the successful operations, NDLEA Chairman Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) urged personnel nationwide to sustain the fight against drug trafficking and abuse. As traffickers adopt increasingly sophisticated concealment methods, authorities remain determined to stay one step ahead.
