“PDP Won’t Die” — Lawmaker Breaks Silence Amid Defections And Internal Crisis
As political tensions continue to shake the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of future elections, a senior lawmaker has delivered a bold message that is already generating reactions across Nigeria’s political space.
Despite growing defections, internal disagreements, and uncertainty in several states, Chairman of the PDP South-South caucus in the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, insists the opposition party is far from collapse.
Speaking during a forum organised by the Federated Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Bayelsa State, Agbedi expressed confidence that the PDP would survive its current troubles and emerge even stronger.
According to him, political parties naturally experience difficult phases, but true strength is measured by the ability to withstand pressure, rebuild, and reconnect with supporters.
The lawmaker argued that the PDP remains “a party of the people” with strong grassroots support across the South-South region and other parts of the country.
His comments come at a time when several political observers have raised concerns over the wave of defections affecting the party, especially in Bayelsa State and other key political strongholds.
However, Agbedi believes the current crisis should not be interpreted as the end of the PDP. Instead, he described it as a temporary phase that could ultimately strengthen the party’s internal structure and unity if handled properly.
He urged party members not to lose hope, stressing that reconciliation, discipline, and renewed commitment would be critical for the PDP’s recovery ahead of future political contests.
The federal lawmaker also used the opportunity to speak about his own political ambition, saying his years in the House of Representatives have prepared him for greater legislative responsibility as the PDP nominee for the Bayelsa West Senatorial District.
Still, beyond his personal ambition, Agbedi maintained that the survival of the PDP depends on leaders placing collective interest above personal gains.
As political realignments continue across Nigeria, one question now lingers in the minds of many observers: Can the PDP truly recover from its internal battles and reclaim its position as a dominant political force?
