Tambuwal Explains Why He Quit 2027 Senate Race
Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has surprised political observers after revealing why he withdrew from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race, a move already generating intense reactions within opposition circles.
Tambuwal, who remains one of the most influential figures in the African Democratic Congress in Sokoto State, announced that he stepped aside to promote unity within the party and create opportunities for younger politicians to emerge.
The former governor officially handed over the ADC senatorial ticket to former Commissioner for Finance, Faruk Malami-Yabo, whom he described as a capable and visionary leader prepared to move the party forward.
Speaking during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting, Tambuwal stressed that leadership should not be driven solely by personal ambition but by continuity, mentorship, and the willingness to prepare a new generation of political leaders.
“The time has come for experienced leaders to deliberately create room for emerging voices and fresh ideas,” he said, adding that he has full confidence in Malami-Yabo’s ability to unite people and provide purposeful leadership.
The development has sparked fresh political conversations across Sokoto and beyond, especially as many Nigerian politicians are often criticised for holding onto political positions for decades without giving younger aspirants opportunities to grow.
Political analysts believe Tambuwal’s decision may strengthen his image as a strategic political leader focused on long-term party stability rather than immediate personal gain.
Reacting to the endorsement, Malami-Yabo praised Tambuwal as a mentor and symbol of selfless leadership, promising to uphold inclusiveness, accountability, and people-oriented governance if elected.
The ADC leadership in Sokoto also confirmed that the move aligns with the party’s broader strategy of empowering younger candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to party officials, several House of Representatives tickets within the state have already been handed to younger aspirants as part of efforts to reshape the party’s future.
As the political atmosphere ahead of 2027 continues to intensify, Tambuwal’s decision is now being viewed as a rare move that could influence conversations about generational leadership and internal democracy within Nigerian politics.
