Hope for Nigerians? AFAN Reveals When Rice, Garri, Yam Prices Could Crash

After months of rising food prices and growing hardship across Nigeria, there may finally be a glimmer of hope for millions of households struggling to survive. The All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, has revealed that prices of major staple foods such as rice, yam, cassava, and garri could begin to drop by the next harvest season — but only if urgent action is taken.

Speaking in Lagos, the Deputy Chairman of AFAN’s Lagos chapter, Shakin Agbayewa, explained that Nigeria has the capacity to reduce food inflation if governments at all levels improve security and lower the heavy burden currently facing farmers.

According to him, insecurity in farming communities remains one of the biggest threats to food production. Many farmers are reportedly afraid to return to their farmlands, while those still producing crops are battling extremely high costs for fertilisers, fuel, transportation, and tractor operations.

Agbayewa warned that these rising production expenses eventually affect ordinary Nigerians because farmers are forced to transfer the costs to consumers in markets across the country. As a result, the prices of everyday food items continue to climb beyond the reach of many families.

However, he believes the situation can change if authorities become more deliberate in supporting agriculture. The AFAN official called on both federal and state governments to provide subsidised fertilisers, affordable loans, improved rural roads, irrigation systems, and stronger protection for farmers.

He also stressed the importance of working closely with farmers’ associations to create policies tailored to the unique agricultural challenges in different states.

Despite the current economic pressure, Agbayewa insisted that Nigeria has enough fertile land and manpower to feed itself and even reduce dependency on imported food. According to him, increased farming activities in the next planting season could naturally lead to lower food prices and improved economic stability nationwide.

For millions of Nigerians anxiously watching market prices every week, the big question now remains: will government action come quickly enough before another round of hardship hits consumers?
