Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has faulted the Nigerian Senate for rejecting real-time electronic transmission of election results, describing the decision as a serious blow to electoral transparency and democratic trust.
In a statement released Wednesday night, Atiku said the move undermines ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s electoral system, especially at a time when democracies worldwide are embracing digital technology to improve credibility.
According to him, the refusal to adopt real-time transmission sustains loopholes that encourage result manipulation and post-election disputes. He argued that transparency-enhancing reforms are often resisted, while systems that benefit incumbency are preserved.
Atiku stressed that electronic transmission is not a partisan issue but a democratic safeguard that reduces human interference and ensures polling unit results reflect the true will of voters.
He also criticised the Senate’s reliance on the 2022 Electoral Act provisions, describing them as inadequate and reflective of a lack of political will to deliver fully transparent elections.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, Atiku urged Nigerians, civil society groups, the media, and the international community to remain vigilant and continue pushing for credible electoral reforms.
