Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been remanded in Suleja Prison, Niger State, following her arraignment on charges of cyberstalking and criminal defamation. The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, ordered the remand after Okorie pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge.
The police allege Okorie conspired with Ifeoma Mbonu (at large) to defame fellow actress Mercy Johnson Okojie by calling her a “blood-sucking demon” on Instagram and TikTok in 2024. Her administrative bail had expired, and the prosecution urged remand, citing previous failure to honour police invitations.
Okorie’s lawyer, Alex Ejesieme (SAN), argued she was denied adequate time to prepare her defence and requested release to care for her child while filing a formal bail application. Justice Nwite criticised the police for denying Okorie access to her lawyers and ordered both sides to exchange all relevant documents within 24 hours.
Okorie is scheduled to appear for a formal bail hearing on January 30. The case highlights rising scrutiny over social media conduct and legal consequences for alleged online harassment in Nigeria.
