Akpabio Raises Alarm On Rising Food Prices And Hunger Crisis

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has raised serious concerns over Nigeria’s soaring food prices, warning that 35 million citizens could face hunger this year. Speaking at the first Senate sitting of 2026, he called for urgent national action to stabilise food supply, protect vulnerable households, and prioritise food security as a national emergency.

Akpabio stressed that legislation, oversight, and collaboration were needed to boost agricultural productivity and ease inflationary pressures. Beyond food insecurity, he commended Nigeria-US military cooperation in combating terrorism and extended condolences over the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki.

Highlighting the Senate’s final stretch of its tenure, Akpabio urged lawmakers to focus on impactful laws that strengthen institutions, unlock economic growth, and restore public confidence. He assured citizens of careful scrutiny and responsible passage of the 2026 budget, insisting that the legislature remain committed to tangible results and national unity.
