Nigeria’s military justice system is set to test a new democratic chapter as alleged coup plotters prepare to face court-martial under civilian oversight. Retired Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka-Usman says the failed attempt to topple democratic governance is a grave offence that demands strict adherence to military and civil law.

Speaking on ARISE NEWS, the former army spokesperson explained that serving officers cannot be tried until commanders confirm due process has been followed. He stressed that court-martial proceedings, backed by the Armed Forces Act, carry the same weight as a High Court and allow appeals up to the Supreme Court.

Kukasheka-Usman noted that this is the first time an attempted coup is being handled during uninterrupted democracy, reflecting reforms that place the military firmly under civilian control. According to him, the ongoing process shows the armed forces’ commitment to accountability, transparency and respect for democratic authority as Nigerians await formal arraignment.
