Germany Considers 2026 World Cup Boycott Over Trump Actions

A senior German Football Association (DFB) official has called for serious discussions on boycotting the 2026 World Cup, citing tensions with the United States after President Donald Trump’s controversial moves on Greenland and threatened tariffs on European nations, including Germany.

DFB vice-president Oke Göttlich, also St Pauli president, stressed that the political situation warrants action, drawing parallels with the 1980 US-led Olympic boycott over the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Göttlich highlighted concerns over football’s neutrality in political matters, referencing Germany’s protest at the 2022 Qatar World Cup against FIFA’s OneLove armband restrictions.

While France has rejected a boycott and Denmark monitors the situation, Germany is weighing options amid ongoing US-Europe tensions. Göttlich argued that football organizations must define boundaries and defend values in politically charged environments, urging both FIFA and national governments to provide clarity. The call raises questions about the intersection of politics and global sports, potentially shaping discussions ahead of the multi-nation tournament scheduled in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
