The United States military has increased intelligence sharing and military deliveries to Nigeria as part of a renewed and more forceful campaign against ISIS-linked terrorist groups.
According to AFRICOM Deputy Commander, Lieutenant General John Brennan, the move reflects Washington’s decision to take a more aggressive stance against Islamic State threats across Africa, with Nigeria now a major focus. The cooperation follows recent US airstrikes on ISIS-linked targets in northwest Nigeria and the inaugural US–Nigeria Joint Working Group meeting in Abuja.
American support will prioritise intelligence sharing, equipment supply, and operational coordination to strengthen Nigerian air and ground operations, particularly against ISWAP in the northeast and emerging ISIS cells in the northwest.
Despite diplomatic tensions over religious violence narratives, both countries appear aligned on expanding counterterrorism efforts. US officials stress that intelligence support will target terrorist threats broadly, not along religious lines, as Nigeria continues battling insurgency, insecurity, and cross-border militant expansion.
