The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State suffered another setback on Monday as one of its notable figures and former House of Assembly candidate, Hon. Niyi Adeogun, dumped the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeogun, who defected alongside several PDP executives, including the Ward Chairman and Youth Leader, announced his decision at his Erinmope/Aaye Oja/Irare Ward in Moba Local Government Area.
Speaking during the reception ceremony organised by APC leaders, the former PDP stalwart said his defection was inspired by the economic reforms and inclusive governance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
He commended Governor Oyebanji for what he described as an “open-door leadership style” that embraces people from all walks of life — including students, women, artisans, civil servants, and opposition members.
“I am not defecting for personal gain, but to support the good work of Governor Oyebanji. He has complemented President Tinubu’s efforts at the centre, and our economy is rising through the strategic implementation of this administration’s six pillars,” Adeogun said.
He highlighted the numerous ongoing infrastructure projects across the state as a testament to the governor’s commitment to development, including:
- The Erinmope–Irare Road,
- The Ado-Ekiti Flyover,
- The Ado–Ikere Road,
- The Ado–Iworoko–Ifaki Road, and
- The Ado-Ekiti Ring Road, among others.
Adeogun added that he would use his political experience to mobilise grassroots support for the APC and ensure Governor Oyebanji’s re-election in 2026.
“Everywhere you go, there are signs of progress. Ekiti has become a massive construction site,” he noted.
Receiving the defectors, APC State Chairman, Hon. Sola Elesin, represented by Ward Chairman, Hon. Kolawole Olaoluwa, assured them of equal opportunity and fair treatment within the ruling party.
“Now that you have joined us, be loyal to our party and our leader, Governor Oyebanji, a man of integrity. You have every right to aspire to any position. As 2026 approaches, work with others to ensure the governor’s re-election,” Elesin said.
The event was attended by APC stakeholders, local leaders, and supporters who described the defection as a “big political gain” for the ruling party ahead of the next general elections.
