El-Rufai Predicts APC Exit As Power Shifts Ahead Of 2027

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not rule Nigeria indefinitely, hinting that the party could lose power in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the 23rd Daily Trust Dialogue themed “Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: What Is Working and What Is Not,” El-Rufai said Nigeria’s democracy stands out in Africa because power remains open to competition.

He recalled that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governed Nigeria for 16 years before losing power, stressing that the APC is not immune to the same fate. According to him, the absence of a permanent ruling party is a democratic achievement.

However, El-Rufai noted that political competition has yet to produce strong governance and accountability. He also criticised Nigerian political parties, describing them as weak, personality-driven and transactional.

The former governor spoke from Brussels, Belgium, where he is recovering from illness, and apologised for his absence at the Abuja event.
