The Lagos State Government has confirmed that the death toll from the fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island has risen further. The latest update followed the recovery of another body from the rubble, days after intensive search and rescue operations began.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, disclosed that several people were also injured during the inferno. Some victims, including a firefighter, were hospitalised, while others received treatment at the scene and were later discharged.
Authorities revealed that multiple bodies were recovered from different sections of the collapsed structure, with some victims burnt beyond recognition. The devastating fire, which broke out on the lower floors of the high rise building, destroyed goods worth millions of naira and displaced many traders.
Emergency teams remain on ground as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
