A fresh and contentious debate on marriage and gender roles has been ignited by social media personality Geh Geh, who has boldly declared that African men have no business kneeling to propose to a woman. His comments, made during a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast, have since gone viral, dividing opinions across Nigeria.
Geh Geh argued that the act of kneeling is illogical, as he believes the man is ultimately bestowing a favour upon the woman by asking for her hand in marriage. “Naturally, in Africa, men are not supposed to kneel to propose to a woman because you’re doing the woman a favour. It’s like doing someone a favour and still kneeling to beg them. It doesn’t make sense,” he stated emphatically.
He further intensified his argument by questioning the very necessity of marriage for men. “If we’re being honest, men don’t need marriage for anything. What do I really need a woman for? Nothing. The only thing a man needs a woman for is children, and even without marriage, you can still have them. So if I know I don’t really need you and I’m inviting you into my life, why should I kneel?” he questioned.
As expected, his blunt take has triggered a firestorm of reactions on social media. While some commentators have praised him for his “controversial truth bombs,” others have labeled his perspective as delusional and disrespectful to women and the institution of marriage. The online discourse has left Nigerians grappling with a central question: is this a bold stance against outdated traditions, or a misguided take on modern relationships?
